Montz Ranch Complex

Montz Ranch & Montz Point Wildlife Management Area (Montz Point WMA)

The Montz Ranch is located 14 miles southwest of Morrill, Nebraska and 3 miles east of the
Wyoming/Nebraska border. The Ranch lies on the east side of Stegal Road. It consists of 1400 acres and
is bordered to the east by Montz Point WMA which includes 900 acres. There are two public parking
areas; the north one is large enough to accommodate horse trailers and RV parking and the smaller
parking area is located just to the north of Montz Point which is vehicle parking only. There are walk
through gates at both locations. There are natural springs that originate in two woody canyons coming
off the west slope of the escarpments. These springs supply a dependable source of water for a variety
of wildlife and livestock, and previously for ancient humans. The ranch has a rich cultural and
archaeological importance for its fossil and artifact discoveries. There are no designated trail markers or
developed trails on the property although there is a two-track ranch road at the south parking area that
leads to the Montz Point WMA. The ranch is the far western boundary of the Wildcat Hills Range which
extends 55 miles to the south of Bridgeport, Nebraska. There are several wildlife species found on the
ranch that are common to the Wildcat Hills, although the main attraction is a resident band of Big Horn
Sheep and a Golden Eagle nest on the north slope of Montz point.

This property will be managed for biodiversity conservation and is part of the identified core for the Wildcat Hills Wildlands Initiative.
